Motorcyclist Killed on SUKE: Why It’s Time to Rethink Motorcycle Safety

A tragic accident on the Sungai Besi–Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway (SUKE) recently claimed the life of a 33-year-old motorcyclist following a collision involving two motorcycles and a trailer lorry. According to reports, the rider—travelling on a Yamaha MT-15—first collided with another motorcycle before losing control and falling onto the roadway. Moments later, a trailer travelling behind was unable to avoid him, resulting in fatal injuries.

Sadly, this type of crash is not uncommon.

Across Southeast Asia, motorcycles dominate the transport landscape, serving as the primary mode of mobility for millions. But with that mobility comes vulnerability. Motorcycles—also known as Powered Two-Wheelers (PTWs)—lack the protective structures found in cars, meaning that when crashes occur, riders often suffer severe or fatal injuries.

This reality forces an uncomfortable question: Are we doing enough to protect riders?

The Awareness Gap Behind Many Crashes

A common factor in many motorcycle crashes is limited situational awareness. Riders often operate in complex traffic environments where hazards appear quickly—sudden braking, lane changes, or vehicles entering blind spots. When awareness comes even a fraction of a second too late, the consequences can be devastating.

Human reaction alone is not always enough.

Just as the automotive industry introduced advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) to improve car safety, motorcycles also need technologies that help riders detect risks earlier and react faster.

A New Generation of Motorcycle Safety Technology

One example of this shift is RideHawk™, a motorcycle collision alert and safety management system developed by Malaysia’s own Motorcycle Safety Solutions Asia (M) Sdn. Bhd. The system uses Forward Collision Warning (FCW) to detect hazards ahead and alert riders in real time.

But RideHawk goes beyond simple warnings.

It combines real-time alerts with telematics, rider safety scoring, and AI-driven training to help riders improve their skills and awareness over time. The system essentially acts as an on-board riding coach, helping riders maintain safer following distances and avoid risky behaviors.

In a scenario like the SUKE crash, such technology could potentially provide a crucial warning—alerting a rider that they are approaching another vehicle too quickly and giving them precious seconds to slow down or adjust their lane position.

Data Shows Technology Can Change Behavior

Early trials have already demonstrated promising results.

Corporate trials with Volvo Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and Nippon Express Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. showed improvements in safer riding behaviour of 33% and 75%, respectively.

These results highlight something important: when riders receive real-time feedback and coaching, safer habits follow.

From Reactive Safety to Preventive Safety

For decades, motorcycle safety has focused largely on helmets, enforcement, and education. While these measures remain critical, they are not enough on their own.

The future of motorcycle safety must shift from reacting to crashes to preventing them altogether.

Technology that enhances situational awareness, provides real-time warnings, and improves rider behavior represents a powerful step forward. Systems like RideHawk show how data, engineering, and behavioral insights can work together to reduce risk on the road.

A Shared Responsibility

Every motorcycle crash represents more than a statistic—it represents a life, a family, and a community affected.

If we want to reduce these tragedies, governments, companies, and technology providers must work together to introduce smarter safety solutions for riders.

Because safer roads are not just about infrastructure.

They are about innovation, awareness, and the tools that help riders make better decisions when seconds matter most.

As a B2B safety technology provider, Motorcycle Safety Solutions works with organizations to equip motorcycle fleets and employees with RideHawk technology—helping protect workers who rely on motorcycles for their daily duties.
