MITRANS Pilot Study of RideHawk™

Proof-of-concept study by the Malaysia Institute of Transport (MiTRANS) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) demonstrated that RideHawk’s real-time audible warnings achieved a statistically significant 49.5% reduction in hard-braking events among motorcycle riders carrying pillion passengers.

The Malaysia Institute of Transport (MITRANS) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) conducted an independent proof-of-concept pilot study evaluating the real-world operational effectiveness of Motorcycle Safety Solutions' (MSS) collision-alert technology.

The study specifically examined the real-world dynamics of two-wheeler commuters travelling with pillion passengers - a common, high-risk mobility scenario across Southeast Asia - evaluating both quantitative telemetry metrics and subjective perceptions of safety, confidence, and comfort.

Study Methodology: Baseline vs. Intervention

The naturalistic evaluation recruited 12 UiTM motorcycle riders who regularly transport pillion passengers, with 9 complete datasets retained for comparative analysis between two distinct operational phases:

Baseline Phase (Warning OFF): The onboard RideHawk™ system operated in stealth mode, passively detecting, logging, and timestamping potential collision events without alerting the rider.

Intervention Phase (Warning ON): Active audible collision warnings were enabled, alerting riders in real time whenever imminent following distances or collision thresholds were detected.

This phase-based setup enabled MiTRANS researchers to empirically assess behavioral shifts directly attributable to proactive situational awareness nudges.

Key Empirical Findings: 49.5% Drop in Hard Braking

The most critical metric evaluated was hard braking—a primary leading indicator of panic reaction and imminent rear-end collision risk:

Consistent Reduction: Across every single rider in the comparison cohort, hard-braking frequency dropped substantially during the intervention phase.

Rate Decline: The average rate declined from 0.97 hard-braking events per kilometer to 0.49 events per kilometer—representing an overall reduction of 49.5%.

Statistical Significance: Rigorous statistical evaluation confirmed the robustness of this outcome:

Paired t-test: p < 0.001

Wilcoxon signed-rank test: p = 0.002

While collision alerts reflect external road exposure that riders cannot always control, hard braking directly reflects how riders respond to emerging threats. MiTRANS concluded that the audible warnings effectively restored situational awareness, prompting earlier, smoother braking deceleration and eliminating abrupt panic inputs.

Rider & Pillion Perception

Beyond quantitative telemetry, post-trial qualitative assessments revealed overwhelming acceptance:

Enhanced Confidence: Both riders and pillion passengers reported feeling safer and more confident on congested urban corridors.

Situational Awareness: Pillion passengers noted that smoother rider responses noticeably reduced physical pitching and journey stress.

Conclusion & Research Collaboration

MiTRANS concluded that the RideHawk™ ecosystem is practically viable for naturalistic commuter deployment and exhibits strong potential to mitigate two-wheeler transit casualties across Malaysia.
